What is acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. This can lead to the formation of pimples, blackheads, or whiteheads, and in more severe cases, cysts or nodules. Acne most often appears on the face, neck, chest, shoulders, and back, as these areas have the highest concentration of oil glands.

The primary factors that contribute to the development of acne include excess oil production, clogged hair follicles, bacteria, and inflammation. Hormonal changes, such as those that occur during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause, can also play a significant role in the development of acne. Other factors like genetics, certain medications, and dietary choices can also influence the likelihood and severity of acne.

There are different types of acne, including:

  1. Whiteheads: These are small, round, white bumps on the skin.
  2. Blackheads: These are small, dark spots that appear on the skin’s surface due to the oxidation of melanin.
  3. Papules: These are small, red, tender bumps that are often inflamed.
  4. Pustules: These are red, tender bumps with white pus at their tips.
  5. Nodules: These are large, solid, painful lumps beneath the surface of the skin.
  6. Cysts: These are painful, pus-filled lumps beneath the surface of the skin and can cause scarring.

Acne can have physical and emotional effects, including pain, irritation, and self-esteem issues. It can also lead to scarring if not treated properly. Fortunately, there are various effective treatments available to manage and reduce acne.

How do we treat Acne at the clinic?

The Obagi CLENZIderm system is a three-step skincare regimen designed to help treat acne, including both non-inflammatory and inflammatory acne. It is a clinically proven system that uses prescription-strength ingredients to penetrate the pores and target the root causes of acne. The system consists of three products: a non-prescription Daily Care Foaming Cleanser, a prescription-only Therapeutic Lotion, and a prescription Therapeutic Moisturizer.

The Daily Care Foaming Cleanser contains 2% salicylic acid, a beta hydroxy acid that helps to exfoliate the skin and unclog pores. It also contains menthol, which provides a cooling sensation and helps to soothe the skin.

The Therapeutic Lotion contains 5% benzoyl peroxide, which is an antimicrobial agent that helps to kill the bacteria that cause acne. It also contains dimethicone, which helps to moisturize the skin and prevent dryness and irritation.

The Therapeutic Moisturizer is a non-comedogenic, glycerin-rich moisturizer that provides hydration while helping to soothe and protect the skin.

The CLENZIderm system is often recommended for individuals with acne-prone skin who have not seen sufficient improvement with over-the-counter treatments. Since the Therapeutic Lotion and Therapeutic Moisturizer require a prescription, it’s important to consult with a dermatologist to determine if the CLENZIderm system is appropriate for your skin and to obtain a prescription.

It’s important to note that the use of prescription-strength acne treatments like those found in the CLENZIderm system should be carefully monitored by a healthcare professional, as these products can have side effects and may not be suitable for everyone. It’s also crucial to follow the recommended usage instructions and to use sun protection, as some acne treatments can increase the skin’s sensitivity to the sun.

As with any skincare regimen, individual results may vary, and it’s important to follow the advice of a healthcare professional and to be patient with the process of treating acne.
